Gregorio González, 104, of Roma, TX, passed away on August 19, 2025, in Rio Grande City, TX. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 77 years, Leonarda B. González, his mother Cristina González , father Pablo González, and sister Magdalena Barrera. Gregorio is survived by his children Ciro González (Diana), Maria Cristina (Rudy +), Santa Martha (Alberto +), César (Nelda), and Javier (Melba), nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, along with countless nieces and nephews.
Gregorio (Gollito) had been a resident of Roma, Texas since 1954 when he immigrated with his small family from Mexico. He was a field laborer at La Casita Farms until his retirement but continued to work in his community helping families with gardening projects. His love of the outdoors and keen eye for gardening kept him busy. As the years went on and upon losing his wife in July of 2021, he moved in to Starr County Nursing and Transitional Care.
At his 100th birthday celebration in March 12, 2021, city leaders and the City of Roma proclaimed “Gregorio Gonzalez Day” and continued to honor him for the next two years. Then on his 103rd and 104th birthdays, Rio Grande City leaders honored him with a Centenarian Citizen Certificate. His family and those who knew and loved him will continue to honor him and his legacy for many generations.
More stories and unforgettable memories will be shared at Rodriguez Funeral Home in Escobares, Texas, on Thursday, August 21, 2025, at 3:00 pm for visitation followed by a rosary at 7:00 pm. His funeral mass will take place on Friday, August 22, 2025, at 9:00 am, at Our Lady of Refugio Catholic Church in Roma Texas, with the burial to follow at the Roma City Cemetery.
